Meloni in the Chamber, the majority resolution: "The situation has worsened after US attacks on nuclear sites in Iran"

Meloni in the Chamber, the majority resolution: "The situation has worsened after US attacks on nuclear sites in Iran"

The indiscreet

The text of the document seen by Il Foglio that will be approved today by the Chamber in view of the European Council: "Support the diplomatic solution with Tehran". And on Gaza: "Immediate ceasefire: help civilians and release Israeli hostages". On Ukraine: the center-right is committed to supporting it also with reconstruction

Never has a majority resolution on the eve of the European Council been so delicate. The US attack on Iran has forced the coalition parties to overturn it in the last 24 hours and it is not certain that tomorrow in the Senate it will not change again. Giorgia Meloni will speak today at 3 pm in the Chamber in view of the Brussels summit next Thursday and Friday. The text, which Il Foglio has seen, says that "the heads of state and government will also have to deal with the worsening of the conflict between Iran and Israel - Italy signed the declaration of the G7 leaders in recent days in Kananaskis (Canada) in which the commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East is reaffirmed - which requires immediate intervention by Europe in support of every negotiating effort aimed at guaranteeing the security for the existence of the State of Israel and the elimination of the Iranian nuclear threat".

Above all, the majority resolution certifies that "the worsening of the crisis in the Middle East following the attacks on Iranian nuclear sites and, in particular, the efforts aimed at a return to the negotiating table for a political solution to the ongoing crisis are of particular importance". A way, so it seems to read it, to distance oneself from Trump's midnight hammer operation that began in the Italian night between Saturday and Sunday.

Still on the subject of the Middle East, the majority document, which will be subject to revisions until the last possible second, also speaks of Gaza. "Europe must continue to work for the stabilization of the Gaza area, focusing on two priorities that can no longer be postponed: unconditional access for direct humanitarian aid to the Strip, also guaranteeing the protection of the population and of civil, medical, educational infrastructure and the headquarters of international organizations; the release of all Israeli hostages and the immediate return to the ceasefire". Always with a view, it is stated, of a "composition of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with the “two peoples, two states” solution.

With respect to the other ongoing conflict, the one in Ukraine, the text says that "it is essential that Ukraine also be supported in the aspects of its reconstruction, and in this sense Italy will co-organize with the Kyiv Government the Conference on reconstruction that will be held next 10-11 July in Rome". And that it is necessary to push for "possible prospects for a ceasefire and the start of peace negotiations". As "Italy is playing a central role in the path towards peace, supporting the negotiating efforts and the need for a strategic role for Europe in pursuing the objective of a just and lasting peace that preserves the territorial integrity of Ukraine, guaranteeing it a future of security and stability, as well as the ability to build its future on the basis of the principles of democracy and the rule of law".
